McConnell lavishes praise on trio of festival chiefs

FIRST Minister Jack McConnell has paid tribute to three leading lights of the Capital's festival season who will retire when this year's events come to an end.

Speaking at the annual Edinburgh Festival reception at Bute House, he praised Sir Brian McMaster, Shane Danielsen and Brigadier Mel Jameson for helping to raise their events "to a new level of prestige and success".

Edinburgh International Festival director Sir Brian will retire next month after his 15th year in one of the biggest jobs in British arts.

Brig Jameson is calling it a day after producing the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for 12 years.

This year's 24-performance run is the eighth successive sold-out season that the 62-year-old Honorary Colonel of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has overseen.

And Australian Shane Danielsen is moving on after five years in charge of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Mr McConnell said: "All three have helped make sure Edinburgh remains the world's premier festival city. I look forward to working with their successors to ensure that August in Edinburgh remains the place to be for culture."
